Finding Friends After Moving to a New Area
Moving can be exciting. Finding a new apartment, a new neighborhood, a new city, starting a new life. While this can be fun, there are certainly some difficult aspects. One thing that often gets overlooked is finding new friends. When we’re young, finding friends is as simple as seeing someone playing soccer on the playground, and joining in. Often, the best friends you find are the ones that are two doors down and in your class. But as adults, we don’t have that. It’s much so much harder. Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be. There are a variety of ways to meet new people and make new friends after moving somewhere new.
Talk to your friends about it- While you may be moving away from some of your close friends, that isn’t the end of it. They may know someone in your new area that would be happy to show you the ropes, from the best bars, to the nicest parks. The best part about this method is that, chances are, if you two have a mutual friend, you’ll probably like each other too!
Join a sport- Organized youth sports are one of the best ways to make friends when you’re young. Turns out, it’s a great way to meet friends as an adult too! Do you like baseball? Try finding a co-ed recreational league! You’ll meet people with similar interests, and can grow a friendship from there.
Explore- There are few things more fun when moving to a new area than exploring. There’s a special joy that comes from discovering a cool coffee shop on a forgotten corner, or a bar that is exactly your favorite style. These new places are great ways to find friends. Grab a beer on a Sunday afternoon and sit at the counter. You’re sure to meet a few fun people.
Check out local events- Every city and town has at least a few local events to attend. From arts and crafts fairs, to concerts and boardwalks, there are tons of places that people go to meet up and enjoy themselves.
Talk to new coworkers- If you moved to a new city and started a new job, you have a wealth of potential friendships to draw from. What can start as a smile and nod at the water cooler can evolve to grabbing coffee on a break, or a bite to eat after work. Plus, you already have something in common!
Check out the local apps- It’s 2020. You can go on your phone and have nearly anything delivered to your doorstep, why not do the same for friends? There are a variety of apps that can help you meet new people, you just need to download them. From the classic dating apps that will introduce you to new people, to apps like MeetUp and SupperClub that will connect you to like minded individuals, you’re sure to find some cool people.
